Tidel Wave hits Palliyawatte Island

450 Persons were displaced when Palliyawatte island in Kalpitiya was inundated by a tidal wave on 16th May evening. The low lying areas of the island went 3 to 4 feet under water. Nearly 150 fisher families had to abandon their homes.

40,139 Families affected by Floods and Heavy rain in Sri Lanka

Due to torrential rains, Some parts of the country are experiencing Floods. The most affected Districts are Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara and Galle. Around 40,139 families have been affected. 17 deaths were reported by this districts.

The National Disaster Relief Services Center (NDRSC) of the Ministry of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services is mandated to provide relief assistance to victims of flood to meet their emergency needs. The Center has already provided relief assistance to the victims who are living in temporary camps or with their relatives and friends.

Already released Rs. 5 Millions to District and Divisional authorities to provide emergency relief assistance to flood and landslides victims  by the National Disaster Relief Services Centre (NDRSC) of the Ministry of Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services.

 

Tremors in Tissamaharama

20th July 2007, Two minor earth tremors were reported from Beralihela, Tissamaharama in Hambantota District. The first occurred around 5.55 am and just after an hour (6.55 am) there was another minor tremor. Both tremors lasted for five seconds each and reported minor damages to some houses.

Floods and Landslides in Western, North Western, Sabaragamuwa and Uva

Wednsday, October 25th 2006.Due to torrential rain accompanied with high gale, the country is experiencing flood situation. People of the Districts of Gampaha, Kalutara, Colombo, Puttalam, Badulla & Ratnapura have been affected Flood & Landslides, around 5,000 families have been affected and 75 houses are damaged partially or completely. Two deaths have been reported.

Arrangements have been made to provide emergency relief assistance to flood victims  by the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) of the Ministry of Disaster Relief Services. The center has setup an emergency operation unit to coordinate and monitor disaster situation and to provide emergency relief measures to victims assistance with  Districts and Divisional Authorities.

Sinking Bangladesh Ship off the Southern Coast

Thursday, September 7th 2006. The vessel "Amanth Sah" bound to Bombay began to sink two nautical miles off the coast between Habaraduwa and Galle in Sri Lanka. All 34 crew was rescued by the Sri Lanka Navy.

The damaged vessel has leaked oil & it spread oil 11 km in the Koggala coastal area. A massive environmental hazard is created by this disaster.

 

Tornado - Horowpathana in Anuradhapura

Sunday, September 3rd. A destructive Tonardo occured at Horowpathana Divisional Secretariat in Anuradhapura District, has caused severe damages to properties & livelihood of the people in the area.

Casualties (Injured) - 01 , Houses Fully Damaged - 35, Houses Partially Damaged - 135, Affected People - 568, Loss Estimated Rs. 2,030,000/=

 

Tiger attacks in Muttur

Wednsday, August 03rd. The Violence that erupted recently in Muttur and Serunuwara of the Trincomalee District are resulted in a number of deaths and displacement of a considerable number of families. The displaced families were sheltered in places of worship and schools. Ministry of Disaster Relief services took prompt action to provide relief to the families affected. Rs. 500,000 was allocated to District Secretary of Trincomale to provide cooked meals, dry rations and other immediate relief assistance by The Ministry of Disaster Relief Services.

 

LTTE has closed sluice gates of Mavilaru

Wednsday, August 02nd. LTTE has closed sluice gates of Mavilaru preventing water supply for 15,000 families and 28,000 paddy acres since 21st July. After this incident 35 number of 2000L water tanks was granted to Divisional Secretary of Seruwila on 1st August by Ministry of Disaster Relief Services.

 

Floods in Western, Sourthern and Sabaragamuwa

Thursday,June 22nd. Floods caused by heavy rains over the past few days have affected four districts of Western, Southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces of Sri Lanka. Nearly 100 families in the Kalutara, Matara, Ratnapura and Kegalle districts are affected due to the floods and landslides.

National Disaster Management Center has been formed The Emergency Disaster Operation Unit which is being operate 24 hours under The Ministry of Disaster Relief Services to conduct the current situation.

Ministry of Disaster relief has already allocated 1.4 Million Rupees for relief activities to the District secretaries of affected areas.

 

GRANDPASS FIRE DISASTER

The recent fire disaster which occurred 4 p.m. on 07.06.2006. The Fire Brigades of the Colombo Municipality, Air Force and Ports Authority, using around 24 fire engines, were deployed to extinguish the flames. However, on the 19th of June 2006, the 3rd term of the school will commence and before this date they will have to vacate the school. Hon. M.S.S. Ameer Ali, M.P., Minister of Disaster Relief Services, stated that a sum of Rs. 600,000/= has been allocated by his Ministry to construct temporary house at the same place for these affected people.

The Minister further stated that Funds have also been given by the before said Ministry to the District Secretary to provide Rs. 300,000/= for Milk, cloths, mats and other necessary items. Arrangements have also been made by the District Secretary to allocate Rs.49,000/= for dry rations to 100 families at Rs. 490/= to each family for a week. The total amount allocated as relief assistance to these victims is Rs. 949,000/=.

 

PROVISION OF RELIEF ASSISTANCE TO VICTIMS OF RECENT VIOLENCE IN TRINCOMALEE & BATTICALOA DISTRICTS

The Violence that erupted recently in the Trincomalee District resulted in a number of deaths and displacement of a considerable number of families. The displaced families are presently living in temporary refugee camps or with their relatives and friends. Ministry of Disaster Relief took prompt action to provide relief to the families affected. The families of those killed were provided funds to meet funeral expenses and all the displaced families were provided with cooked meals and dry rations. The total value of relief assistance provided so far is as follows.
